What is Montessori?

Maria Montessori: Teacher of Teachers

Maria MontessoriAs a little girl in Italy during the 1870s, Maria Montessori knew she was destined to do great things. She grew up to give the children of the world a precious gift – a new kind of education.

Headstrong and smart, Maria became the first woman to enroll in the University of Rome’s medical school and was the first Italian woman to become a doctor. She earned awards, scholarships, and the highest test scores of her class.

Her work with the sick brought to her attention the plight of mentally ill children in hospitals and poor children in the slums of Rome. As Maria studied and helped them, she began to learn how all children learn best – seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling, and at their own pace.

A teacher of teachers, Maria traveled all over the world to train others in her methods and to establish Montessori schools.
